The High-Tech Research Center Project supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology aims to promote the development of advanced technology and fundamental academic research required by our society. It is part of the policy for the promotion of private university, which increases international competition of Japan in the field of science research. Jikei Univ. School of Med. has been accepted with the theme of "The Development of new method of therapy using medical VR in the collaboration of medicine and engineering". We have the three research projects: "Development of Image-guided surgery method augmented by VR", "Development of therapy with VR in the field of thin vessel" and "VR Imaging System for advanced robotic surgery".

Newly established research facility
    Laboratory of medical virtual reality


This laboratory is composed of a large, high-resolution projection display connected to super-computer and force-feedback devices. These devices create a surgical simulation complete with the function of tactile sensation regarding the deformation of soft tissues such as organs and blood vessels. This system also enables to make an experiment in tele-robotic surgery. Furthermore, it is hoped that Laparoscopic robot surgery system will be developed as a part of this project.


    4D motion measurement studio


This studio contains measurement devices which measure human 4D(time-sequential 3D) motion without constraints. This system captures time spatial human motion by measuring markers on the body surface using 6 high-speed infra-red cameras and a DSVC system. The DSVC (Dynamic Spatial Video Camera) system is composed of 60 fire-wire digital cameras surrounding the subject. The room itself is painted in blue. The system is designed to abstract only the human motion in means it uses chroma key and analyze the digitized information.
